Classroom News
Our class has been busy these first few weeks of first grade!

During the first week of school, we went on a "people hunt" to learn more about our classmates.  Students had to find a different person to sign each box on their paper. We found out that lots of children in our class play soccer, like the beach, and love to read!

We have launched the first component of the Daily 5: Read to Self. During this time children independently read the pictures, read the words, or read both pictures and words of a just right book at their level. We're practicing building our stamina in order to reach our goal of reading independently for 20 minutes. Right now, we're up to reading for twelve minutes straight!

The concepts of counting and addition have been our focus in Math. Number writing, counting different items accurately, and playing dice and card games are some of the activities we've been doing to practice these skills.

ME Bags have been a huge hit! The children have enjoyed sharing the items they brought from home and explaining why they brought each object. This activity has been a great way to learn more about each other!

Enjoy the weekend!

Important Information
·      September can be a very warm month. It is helpful for children to have a water bottle to keep on their desk in order to stay hydrated throughout the day.
·      It is important that you send your child with a snack each day.  We have extra spoons and forks if needed.

Communication
Your child will be responsible for a home-school communication folder, called a BEE Book, that will be brought to and from school every day. BEE stands for Bring Everything Everyday. It is intended to be a way to communicate notes, homework, and completed work that your child will carry back and forth between school and home.  Thursday Backpack Folders will also be used to communicate notices and the school newsletter and should be returned on Friday. Please remind your child to take good care of both their BEE Book and Thursday Backpack Folder as they will be used all year.

A class newsletter will be sent home twice a month (about every other week) and will provide information about upcoming important dates, pictures of the students in our class, and news about what we’ve been up to in first grade.  We also have a class website that can be found at http://mslittleinmaynard.blogspot.com. This is where you can access information about our class including news, photos, and links to educational websites. Our website will be a tool that I’ll use to communicate what’s happening in our classroom.  Please visit it often to stay updated!

If at any time during the school year you have a question or concern, please feel free to contact me at elittle@maynard.k12.ma.us, by calling Green Meadow at (978) 897-8246, or by sending a note to school with your child in their BEE Book.

I am very much looking forward to an exciting and rewarding year! J

Most Sincerely,

Ms. Little
