What we've been up to...

Upcoming Events
·      December 24th – January 3rdWinter Break

Hello Families!

In Math, we are working on addition and have learned a few new addition strategies to help us add within 20.  We learned how to count on from the bigger number, use doubles, doubles plus one, doubles minus one, and to use a ten frame or a double ten frame.  Using these strategies make adding easier and more efficient.  Snap cubes, counters, and dice games have helped us practice adding.

We have welcomed several Mystery Readers into our classroom so far this year.  Thank you to parents who have volunteered to read to our class.  We have loved the stories and love trying to guess who will come in based on the hints we’re given. If you have given me your hints, I will be contacting you after the winter break. If you would like to be a Mystery Reader and need the paperwork, please let me know and I will send it home with your child.

Reading Logs & Classroom Supplies
There will be no reading log sent home next week due to the short week and winter break.  If you and your child have time to keep up the routine of reading each day, please do! But please do not feel obligated to keep a reading log over the winter break.

Thank you to families who sent in shared classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year. We are running low on disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Enjoy the winter break!

Hello Families!

In Fundations (phonics), we are working on making and reading words and recognizing special features of words. Special features can be digraphs (wh, th, sh, ch, ck) or buddy letters (qu). We are also learning new trick words (such as you, your, of, or, for), practicing using upper and lower case letters appropriately and trying to remember to put punctuation at the end of our sentences. We have been using white boards, magnet letter boards, going on word hunts around the classroom, and playing spelling games to help us strengthen our phonics skills.

Last week, we visited our third grade buddies in Mrs. Messina’s class to listen to the story The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaola. Afterwards, feeling inspired by the story, we painted our own sunsets.

Conferences and Supplies
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of December 7th.  An email was sent via Sign-Up Genius in October. Please let me know if you did not receive the email.  I am looking forward to meeting with families to discuss each child’s progress thus far in first grade.

Thank you to families who sent in shared classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year. We are running low on disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Enjoy the weekend!
