Hello Families!

In Math, we are working on subtracting and taking numbers apart. We are learning important math vocabulary to help us figure out when to subtract, such as ‘take away’, ‘difference’, ‘break apart’, ‘compare’, and ‘minus.’ We have been using snap cubes, counters, telling subtracting stories and acting them out, and playing games to help us practice this concept.

In Science, we are continuing our study of plants, seeds, and life cycles. After reading a Scholastic News Magazine about what a scientist does, we realized that we can observe just like scientists do!  We ventured into the courtyard right outside our classroom and found one object to bring back inside to look at closely. We used magnifiers to observe our object, drew a picture, and wrote what size, shape, texture, and color our object was in our science notebooks.

Last week, we filled up the marble jar! We earn marbles when our class receives compliments, when we help each other, and when we work quietly at our tables. To celebrate, we voted to bring in a stuffed animal from home. On that day, instead of reading to someone, we read to our stuffed animal. We hope to fill up our marble jar again soon!

Conferences and Supplies
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for December 10th and 11th.  Please keep an eye out for an email from Sign-Up Genius, and then follow the directions in the email to sign up for a conference time. I plan to offer times before and after school other days that week as well.

Thank you to families who sent in shared classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year. We are running low on disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Enjoy the weekend!

Hello Families!

Each day during Literacy, we read to self, work on writing, and do word work. We recently added in another part of our Daily Five: Read to Someone.  During this time, students choose a partner to read with, sit elbow to elbow, knee to knee (EEKK) and hold the book in the middle so they both can see. It’s a great opportunity for each child to practice reading fluently and to help their partner if they get stuck on a word.

In Science, we have started our study of plants, seeds, and life cycles. After reading The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, we talked about how seeds and flowers have a cycle that repeats over and over again. Then, we created a KWL chart – what we already Know, what we Want to know, and what we will Learn about plants and seeds over the next few weeks.  We plan to explore the courtyard right outside our classroom later this week.

Last week, we met our new third grade buddies in Mrs. Messina’s class! After we met our buddy, we listened to a story about Johnny Appleseed. Then, we created an apple mobile and colored a picture of Johnny Appleseed together, which connects with our study of plant life cycles in Science.

Enjoy the weekend!
