Hello Families!

In Math, we have started our study of Geometry.  We have named, sorted, counted, built, and created new shapes with two-dimensional shapes using pattern blocks and tangram pieces. Next, we will learn how to identify fractions of different shapes by dividing them into equals shares such as halves, fourths, or quarters.

In Fundations, we have been learning new trick words and practicing reading and writing welded sounds (–ang, -ank, -ing, -ink, -ong, -onk, -ung, and  –unk).  You can support your child at home by practicing words with these sounds, trick words, and reading with them and talking about what you read together. If you have access to a computer, starfall.com, pbskids.org, and storylineonline.net are all great resources to help build reading and phonics skills.

Conferences/Report Cards
Conference reminders have been sent home today. Look for your child’s report card in their Thursday Backpack Folder next week.  Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about their report card or if you would like to change the date and/or time of your conference.

Classroom supplies
Thank you to families who have donated supplies! We are still running low on shared classroom supplies such as disinfecting wipes, tissues, and dry-erase markers. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the weekend! J

Hello Families!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the winter break. We are getting back into the swing of things in our classroom. In Math, we are strengthening our skills in addition and learning about how to identify even and odd numbers by playing dice games and using Brainpop Jr. on the computer.

In Science, we are continuing our study of living and nonliving things and plant life cycles. This week we are focusing on our amaryllis because it grew quite a bit over the winter break! We observed our plant, and then recorded its measurement (10 inches tall!) and other properties we discovered by looking at it closely.

Hello Families!

Our class has launched another part of our literacy block: read to someone! During this time, we sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee to share a book with a partner.  We enjoy this time because we get to find out what kinds of books our classmates are reading, and it gives us an opportunity to both listen to a story and read to a friend.

Last week, we visited our 3rd grade buddies to listen to the story The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaola. After the story, we felt inspired to paint sunsets of our own using watercolors.

 Conferences
Parent/teacher conferences are next week. We will meet to discuss your child’s progress.  A reminder was sent home with your scheduled time. If you are unable to meet at that date or time, please let me know as soon as possible and we can reschedule.

Enjoy the weekend! J
