Hello Families!

In Math, we have been studying time. First, we learned about the parts of a clock and the jobs of the hour hand and the minute hand. Then, we practiced telling time to the hour and half hour by reading both analog and digital clocks. We brainstormed a list of what kinds of things we think it would take us a minute to do. Then, we raced the clock to see how many times we could write our name in one minute, how many tallies we could write in one minute, and how many numbers we could write in one minute. We were surprised at how quick a minute actually is!

Many of our viola and green bean seeds have sprouted! Twenty-three days have passed since we planted them. We have been watering our plants, watching them closely, and recording what we notice in our plant observation books.

Writing Workshop
In Writing Workshop, we have been working on How-To Books.  We each wrote a step-by-step book about how to do or how to make something. Some children explained how to paint a picture, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and how to ice skate, just to name a few. We have lots of talented kids in our class!

Classroom supplies
Thank you to families who have donated supplies! We are still running low on shared classroom supplies such as disinfecting wipes and extra snacks (goldfish, saltines, pretzels). Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the weekend! J

Hello Families!

In Math, we have been studying place value. We have been using place value blocks to help us understand that the two numbers of a two-digit number stand for the amount of tens and ones.

In Science, we each planted a viola seed or a green bean seed in our own cup of soil. We recorded a prediction in our Plant Observation Books of what we think our plant will look like when it grows. We have been waiting patiently and watching our cups of soil closely every day. We can’t wait until we see them start to sprout!

Digital Stories
On Wednesday, we had special visitors from Maynard High School come to our classroom. The technology teacher at the high school, Ms. Dowd, and her students each created a digital story on their iPad to share with each first grader in our class. Some of the stories were about addition, subtraction, geometry, sea animals, and zoo animals. After watching their digital story, each first grader shared one of their favorite books with their high school partner. What a fun experience!

Thank you!
Thank you to families who attended Open House last night. We had a great turnout! Students truly seemed to enjoy leading their families around the classroom and explaining their first grade work.  First graders have come a long way since September and are very proud of themselves!

Classroom supplies
Thank you to families who have donated supplies! We are still running low on shared classroom supplies such as disinfecting wipes and tissues. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy your April Vacation!
