Hello Families!

In Science, we are continuing to use our scientific skills to observe! First, we read the story How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

After reading the story, we looked at the outside and inside of pumpkins closely, and recorded our observations in our science notebooks.  Then, we predicted how many seeds we thought our pumpkin would have inside and counted the seeds by groups of ten.

We have launched Writer’s Workshop!  After talking about how the best stories come from the heart, we each created a heart map with pictures and words about people and experiences that are important to us.  We will keep our heart maps in our writing folder so we’ll be able to refer to them when thinking of story ideas. We have been working on writing true stories that really happened to us.

Each Writer's Workshop session begins with a mini lesson. Then, children think about what they'd like to write about, tell their partner the story, write the story, and then draw a picture to go along with their words. At the end of each session there is an opportunity to share what they've written with their classmates.

We are working on becoming independent and fluent readers. Last week, our class learned how to use the Raz-Kids website to help us practice reading and answering comprehension questions.  We will use the website all year at school. Your child may also access the Raz-Kids website at home and record what they read as part of their reading homework.

Conferences and Supplies
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of December 7th.  An email was sent via Sign-Up Genius in October. Please let me know if you did not receive the email.

Thank you to families who sent in shared classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year. We are running low on disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Enjoy the weekend!

Hello Families!

In Math, we are working on subtracting and taking numbers apart. We are learning important math vocabulary to help us figure out when to subtract, such as ‘take away’, ‘difference’, ‘break apart’, ‘compare’, and ‘minus.’ We have been using snap cubes, counters, telling subtracting stories and acting them out, and playing games to help us practice this concept.

In Science, we are continuing our study of plants, seeds, and life cycles. After reading a Scholastic News Magazine about what a scientist does, we realized that we can observe just like scientists do!  We ventured into the courtyard right outside our classroom and found one object to bring back inside to look at closely. We used magnifiers to observe our object, drew a picture, and wrote what size, shape, texture, and color our object was in our science notebooks.

Last week, we filled up the marble jar! We earn marbles when our class receives compliments, when we help each other, and when we work quietly at our tables. To celebrate, we voted to bring in a stuffed animal from home. On that day, instead of reading to someone, we read to our stuffed animal. We hope to fill up our marble jar again soon!

Conferences and Supplies
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for December 10th and 11th.  Please keep an eye out for an email from Sign-Up Genius, and then follow the directions in the email to sign up for a conference time. I plan to offer times before and after school other days that week as well.

Thank you to families who sent in shared classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year. We are running low on disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Enjoy the weekend!
