Hello Families!
We have been working on writing “All
About” books in Writer’s Workshop. First, we went on a book walk around the
classroom to explore nonfiction books about different kinds of animals. Then,
we decided which animal we found the most interesting and would like to
research. Each student found and recorded several fascinating facts
about their animal, drew a detailed diagram labeling important parts of their
animal, wrote about where their animal lives and what it eats, and learned
about the different kinds of the animal they’re researching. We are becoming
animal experts!
In Math, we are learning how to compare numbers using
symbols for greater than, less than, and equal to (>, <, =). We
have been using place value blocks to compare the amount of tens and ones in
numbers to decide which number is bigger and which is smaller.
We are learning about syllables in Phonics. We learned that a syllable is a word or a
part of a word with one talking vowel, and that all words are considered to be
either “jellybean” words (can be read in one “bite”), or “elephant” words (can
be read in more than one “bite”). We are
also learning about closed syllable and open syllable words. Closed syllable words end with a consonant and
open syllable words end with a vowel. Last week, we went on a word hunt in our
classroom to find and identify which words were closed syllable words and which
were open syllable words.
In Science, we planted mystery seeds. Without knowing what
kind of seed they were planting, each student used their knowledge of the types
of bulbs and seeds they have learned about this year to make a prediction of
what the plants will look like when they start to grow.
Reading Logs &
Classroom Supplies
The month of May will be the last
month of Reading Log homework. The last
Reading Log will be sent home on May 23rd. It will be beneficial for your child to
continue to read; however, they will no longer be required to complete a weekly
log.
Thank you to families who have sent in
shared classroom supplies throughout the school year! We are running low on tissues
and disinfecting wipes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy the weekend!
Mrs. Carli
